About the study

Following the UK's departure from the EU, new EU Ecodesign and Energy Labelling measures will not automatically apply in Great Britain from 2021, so the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) will take on responsibility for setting standards and designing policy to limit the environmental impacts of Energy-related Products (ErPs) in the UK. BEIS, in association with Defra, has commissioned ICF to undertake this research project to help inform future UK priorities for ErPs.

The aim of the study is to identify ErPs (i.e. products that have a direct or indirect impact on energy consumption during use) which have the greatest environmental impact considering in particular their contribution to carbon emissions and resource depletion and have the most potential for improving their environmental performance.

This project will be completed by the end of March 2021.

  4. Product groups lists rank ordered by potential, based on qualitative analysis of evidence.

  2. Quantitative, more detailed analysis of evidence and additional secondary research.
  3. Populated matrices for the shortlisted product groups.

Maximising the benefits of Effective ErP Policy in the UK

In the recent Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, the UK Government committed to establishing a world class policy framework for ErPs and pushing for products to use less energy, resources, and materials – saving carbon and helping households and businesses to reduce their energy bills with minimum effort.

As well as looking to improve traditional ErP policy levers, such as minimum environmental product standards and energy labels, BEIS and Defra are keen to build on product standards and explore other ways to achieve increased uptake of more energy and resource efficient products. These themes were explored in a recent call for evidence which closed on 4 September 2020. This project will further develop this evidence base by identifying products which may be suitable for a range of policy measures, not just Ecodesign and Energy Labelling.
